About GEI Series

KLD and Jantzi launched the GEI series on November 3, 2008 in response to growing demand from institutions and individuals for investment strategies that address the risks and opportunities associated with operating in an increasingly resource constrained economy.

Companies are evaluated for inclusion based on a pure-play level of involvement in and strategic commitment to one of five environmental themes: Alternative Energy, Clean Technology, Sustainable Water, Green Building, and Pollution Prevention. Each theme has the common goal of resolving or alleviating negative environmental concerns associated with the increasing demand and consumption of natural resources.

The KLD/Jantzi Global Environment Index (GEI) series includes seven float-adjusted market capitalization weighted indexes designed to provide an ideal universe for investment funds, structured products and exchange traded funds.

Within these environmental themes, the KLD/Jantzi series aims to deliver long-term performance by identifying companies that:

  • Provide solutions to an emerging global environmental challenge
  • Focus on ecologically aware or environmentally balanced solutions
  • Create innovative products or processes that increase output, while using fewer resources and creating
    less waste and pollution
  • Shift their business models to take advantage of trends in environmental policies and regulations
  • Understand the changing expectations of their stakeholders (i.e. suppliers and end-users), who are
increasingly demanding environmentally sustainable product and service offerings

Fundamentally these indexes focus on companies in 21 countries that operate in sectors that have positive
growth, supported by trends in environmental and social expectations, policies, and regulations. To be eligible for consideration for addition to the GEI series, candidates must be headquartered in, or trade on, an exchange of a developed market economy and possess a minimum 12-month trailing average float-adjusted market capitalization of USD 100 million, and a 12-month trailing average share price above USD 1.00.
